On December 24th, it was reported that the theft of 48.2 billion yen worth of Bitcoin from the cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin was carried out by the North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor. South Korea has announced that the crime has been confirmed. Through a joint investigation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Defense Department’s Cyber Crime Center (DC3), the agency identified the perpetrator of the theft of 4,502.9 BTC that occurred in May 2024. It is believed that TraderTraitor is affiliated with the North Korean hacking group Lazarus Group, and the attack was carried out in multiple stages. The police department stated that it will continue to cooperate with the FBI, other US government agencies, and international partners to investigate the illegal activities of North Korean hackers, including cybercrime and cryptocurrency theft. At the same time, the police department, the Cabinet Cyber Security Center, and the Financial Services Agency have issued documents on the methods and countermeasures of the attack group, urging caution for cryptocurrency-related companies. In response to this leak, DMM Bitcoin has decided to close its exchange. Assets and customer accounts will be transferred to SBIVC Trade, and the transition is expected to be completed by March 2025.
