On December 23, newly elected Republican Senator from Ohio, Bernie Moreno, will serve on the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and plays a key role in developing cryptocurrency legislation. In 2018, Moreno founded Ownum, a company that sells technology to put car ownership on the blockchain. Prior to his political career, he was a member of The Digital Chamber, a blockchain policy organization. Although Moreno did not list cryptocurrency as one of his 16 core “policy priorities” on his campaign website, he did make several statements supporting the industry on X and publicly opposed strict regulatory environments during his campaign in the months leading up to the election.
